OCYM Germany – Youth Wing of Indian Orthodox Church

History of OCYM

In the late 19th century, our visionary church leaders sowed the seeds for the Youth Movement, laying a foundation for spiritual growth. Groups like Yuvajana Sangam, Sunday school, and suvishesha sangam emerged as pillars during a period of church renewal. In 1933, Joseph Mar Severios Valakuzhyil Episcopa and Rev Fr T S Abraham pioneered the Parish-Centred Syrian Yuvajana Sangam. By 1936, under the leadership of Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Philexinos and Clergy P E Daniel, Yuvajana Sangam was recognized as the official youth wing of the Church. In 1958, it was renamed the Orthodox Christian Youth Movement during a conference in Puthupally, launching the monthly publication Orthodox Youth (now known as Orthodox Yuvajanam). Today, the movement thrives with robust Christian youth leadership and an expanded vision for the future.

About OCYM Germany

The Orthodox Church Youth Movement (OCYM) in Germany is a dynamic community comprising students and working professionals aged 18 to 45. Our aim is to provide a supportive environment where young members of the Orthodox faith can come together to grow spiritually, engage in meaningful discussions, and actively contribute to our society. Officially inaugurated on July 22, 2023, by our esteemed Bava Thirumeni H.H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, OCYM Germany has since been committed to serving both our local community and beyond.

Our Mission

At OCYM Germany, our mission is to empower young adults to deepen their faith, cultivate leadership skills, and become agents of positive change in our society. Through a combination of spiritual activities, educational events, and community service initiatives, we strive to foster a sense of belonging and purpose among our members.

Monthly Meetings

We understand the unique challenges and opportunities faced by young adults in today’s world. That’s why we host regular monthly meetings tailored to the interests and needs of students and working professionals. These gatherings provide a space for open dialogue, personal growth, and mutual support, allowing us to navigate life’s complexities together.

Herzwerk Charity Programme

Central to our mission is the Herzwerk (Heart-work) charity programme, which was also officially inaugurated on the same day as our OCYM Unit. As young adults guided by our Orthodox faith, we recognize the importance of giving back to those in need. Through Herzwerk, we pool our resources and support various charitable initiatives that address pressing social issues and alleviate human suffering. From humanitarian aid projects to community development initiatives, Herzwerk enables us to make a tangible difference in the lives of others.

Zone for Immersive Engagement in Language. Also inaugurated on 30 March 2025 in Berlin, ZIEL is our language-learning initiative aimed at breaking the German language barrier that many young people face when settling in Germany. Through interactive learning sessions, conversation circles, and real-life language practice, ZIEL fosters both confidence and competence. Exclusively for OCYM Germany members.

BEYOND ’25

Bringing Enlightenment to Youth through Orthodox Narratives and Discussion. BEYOND ’25 is a monthly online seminar series addressing faith, identity, and life questions. Every third Thursday from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM, youth gather online to listen, reflect, and share. The series continues to be a space where young minds are encouraged to question, seek, and grow together in Christ.

REISE

Religious Exploration & Inspiration for Spiritual Experiences. REISE is OCYM Germany’s travel and fellowship programme. Organised trips bring members together to explore new places, share cultural experiences, and build strong friendships. Through REISE, youth can connect outside the usual church setting, deepening bonds within the community while creating lasting memories.
